HBO Now began in April 2015 as a streaming-only service, launched to meet the rising demand for digital media consumption. Unlike HBO Go, which required a cable subscription, HBO Now provided direct access to HBO content without involving a TV provider.
The HBO brand, dating back to 1972 and headquartered in New York, was already well-established in the television industry. Its move into standalone streaming allowed viewers to explore much of its extensive library of shows and movies on their own terms.
By 2018, HBO Now had reached approximately 5 million subscribers. Most of HBO’s series, specials, and original films were available through the service. However, certain older or niche shows such as Tales from the Crypt and Tenacious D were excluded. Films from various studios, including Universal and Warner Bros., were also offered through licensing agreements.
Users could stream HBO Now across a wide variety of devices. The service supported Android and iOS smartphones, Fire TV, Apple TV, game consoles, smart TVs, and computers. Compatibility with platforms like Chromecast and Android TV added to its accessibility.
Subscribers paid a monthly fee of $14.99. A trial period lasting seven days was typically provided for new users. If not canceled during the trial, billing began automatically. Although cancellation could be done at any time, refunds weren’t usually issued, and service continued through the end of the paid month.
HBO Now was eventually phased out and folded into HBO Max, but its introduction marked an important step in HBO’s effort to expand digital content access.
