Kik is a unique messaging app that doesn’t rely on your phone number. Instead, users connect with each other through usernames. Founded in 2009 by students from the University of Waterloo, the app was created by Kik Interactive, Inc., and officially launched on October 19, 2010. It quickly became popular, gaining a million users within two weeks.
Today, Kik has over 300 million registered users, and nearly 40% of them are teenagers in the United States. The app is free and only available in English. It runs on iOS devices with version 8.1 or higher and Android devices with version 4.1 or newer.
Signing up is simple: just download the app, create an account using an email address and password, and choose a username. This username doesn’t have to reflect your real name and can even contain emojis. Kik does not ask for your phone number, but it does log your IP address to help identify your general location.
After signing up, users can add friends by their usernames and begin exchanging messages. You can send text, images, videos, sketches, and more. If you ever decide to stop using Kik, you can follow the instructions in our guide to delete your account and uninstall the app.
